Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team
18 Years Of Excellance

The Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team will celebrate their 18th season as a Two Plane Formation Aerobatic Act. In years past they gained recognition for flying air-shows throughout the Northeast, now they can be seen in various parts of the U.S. as well as shows in El Salvador and Guatemala in 2004. The 2006 season saw them in April with the first show in Punta Gorda, and ending in Puerto Vallarta in Nov. They have been asked numerous times if they trailer their aircraft to these shows and they reply; “NO, we depart from Key West, Florida then Fly 390 miles across the Gulf of Mexico with our 1 stop in Cancun and continue on non-stop to any one of our destinations".

The team will normally limit their shows to 22 per year between February and November. In their two months down time they attend ICAS conventions, which have been held in Las Vegas, Dallas, and Orlando to book a majority of their shows for the upcoming season. The rest of their down time is to go thru their airplanes completely inside and out. They make sure the planes are in top- notch condition, not only for their safety but for the safety of the spectators. Their Air-show season normally starts in Florida and then continues as far as South America then back thru the U.S. You will seldom find the airplanes at their home base, one in Canaan, CT and the other in Great Barrington, Mass.

THE PERFORMANCE
The Iron Eagles are one of the most exciting and dynamic teams on the Air-show circuit today. These two men have combined their piloting skills into the most challenging and closest formation team that you will see on the Air-show circuit in the world. From their crossfire takeoff, to the switchblade hammerhead and the close head-on maneuvers, missing just feet apart, their fast paced action will always keep you on the edge of your seats.

THE AIRCRAFT
The Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team fly two Super Christen Eagle I Aircraft. They are powered by a highly modified engine producing 320 hp. The aircraft originally came equipped with a 200 hp Lycoming engine, and equipped with 2 seats. The aircraft over a 3 year period were transformed from a sport aerobatic aircraft into one of only 4 single seat Eagles flying in the country today. The front seat was replaced with a 30 gallon Aerobatic fuel tank along with a 25 gallon auxiliary tank and a 11 gallon smoke tank in which they can also run fuel for long extended cross country flights. They can travel up to 750 miles before needing any fuel. The planes cruising speed at 50% power is 200 mph.

THE PERFORMERS
Bill Gordon is lead pilot in the #1 aircraft is from Copake, NY. He joined the Northeast air-shows in the Spring of 1993. He originally started out in competition flying for which he was trained extensively by Mudry Aviation in New York or in the air-show industry. The French Connection Aerobatic Team. Soon after learning aerobatics he joined up with his wing pilot Billy Segalla in 1992, after just completing his own Eagle in just over 1 year to start learning formation flying. After many thousands of hours of practicing with his wing-man he has grown to be one of the industries top formation pilots. Bill has done all of the modification to his and his partners aircraft over the years and is very meticulous and is a true craftsman. Bill is an A & P mechanic and as IA. When not flying air-shows he spends time with his 2 kids.

Billy Segalla, wing-pilot, flying the #2 aircraft is from Canaan, CT. He has been flying air-shows since 1976 at the age of 16. His training began in 1965 flying from Rhinebeck Aerodrome in NY State with his father Stanley Segalla the renowned “Flying Farmer”. Billy started up a company in 1976 with 2 other people with the name of Northeast Air-shows. They flew a 3 plane formation routine all over the Northeast for 10 years. After a tragic accident in which Billy lost his lead pilot he kept going with a 2 plane routine with his best friend Pete Esposito from North Adams, Mass. They flew 2 Pitts Special Biplanes. In 1990 they disbanded with the retirement of Pete from air-shows. Billy then joined up with Bill Gordon to form the Iron Eagle Aerobatic Team. Billy has accumulated more than 10,000 hours of flight time and has flown over 800 shows to date. Billy is married and has two teenagers keeping him busy in his off season.
